Jolly Sailor Inn - Orford UK |
|
Built in the 1700's mainly from wrecked ships' timbers, this unspoilt old favourite once had a reputation as a smugglers' hangout. These days, The Jolly Sailor Inn makes a good base for walkers, fishermen and birdwatchers, and you can be sure of a genuinely cheery friendly welcome in the Community of Orford. There are lovely views from the back of this unspoilt old smugglers' inn across marshes and saltings, as it's right by a busy little quay on the River Ore, opposite Orford Ness and close to marshy Havergate Island, where avocets breed. The several snugly traditional rooms are served from counters and hatches in an old-fashioned central cubicle. There's an unusual spiral staircase in the corner of the flagstoned main bar - which also has 13 brass door knockers and other brassware, local photographs, and a good solid fuel stove; a small room is popular with the dominoes and shove-ha'penny players, and has draughts, chess and cribbage.
Chatty and friendly staff serve well kept Adnams Bitter and Broadside on handpump and big helpings of good straightforward bar food such as local battered fish ‚ cod, eel, flounder - and chips, home-made steak pie or lasagne, home-cooked ham and egg, local seasonal pheasant, and daily roasts (all £5.25); the dining room is no smoking. There are lovely surrounding coastal walks and plenty of outside pursuits; several picnic sets on grass at the back have views over the marshes. No children or credit cards.
